Bat Mask

Replica of the bat mask SMALL size of 15X7.5 cm or 6X3 inches; MEDIUM size of 9.5X4.5 cm or 7 1/2 X 3 3/4 inches and LARGE size of 25X12.7 cm or 9 3/4 X 5 inches.

The Bat God mask is one of the most remarkable works of art found at Monte Alban, Oaxaca.  This piece was discovered in a multiple burial site during excavations carried out in the main square in 1946, and consists of several green stone plaques which were seemingly attached to a wooden base that was lost long before the mask was recovered.  This magnificent piece is a pectoral comprised by a human face covered by a bat mask.  This extraordinary symbol seems to have originated in Chiapas and Guatemala, and is associated with the night, the underworld, and death.
